Maintaining the Lifelong Good Health of Senior Dogs & Cats

Our pets' basic needs change drastically as they age. Once your companion reaches their senior years, it becomes important to be aware of a number of age-related risk factors. These vary greatly from pet to pet, and depend largely on the size and breed of the animal. For cats, ten years of age is generally considered seniority. Dog owners should note that canine seniority can be as early as age six for giant breed dogs, around eight years of age for large dogs, and ten years old for medium and small dogs.

Caring for Your Senior Pet

inside imageDegenerative and/or painful conditions in Senior pets can be managed to minimize discomfort and increase quality of life. We take a multimodal approach to pain, choosing therapies most appropriate for each individual patient.

We also recommend a geriatric bloodwork regimen for seniors pets. These lab tests allow us to gather baselines, keep close tabs on organ function, detect thyroid problems, and look out for conditions like diabetes. These tests should be conducted annually, and diets should be evaluated to ensure proper nutrition. Twice annual physical exams at this stage are also powerful in identifying and preventing health problems for senior pets.

Caring for animal companions in their later years can sometimes present challenges, but it doesn't have to be stressful. See us for advice and answers to questions you may have. By working together, we can make these years fulfilling and enjoyable for the both of you.

The patience, compassion, understanding, and humanity that you showed me goes far beyond any definition of professional ethic. I am in your debt. I thank you.

I want to thank all of you for taking such wonderful care of me when I got my teeth cleaned and tooth pulled recently. I even came home with my coat neatly brushed and smelling mighty fine. I'm my old self again - Harley the Dog
